Recreation and Leisure Program Manager

Position Description:

The Jack Purcell Recreation Association (JPRA) is recruiting for the newly created role of Recreation and Leisures Programs Manager. Reporting to the JPRA Executive Director (ED), the Programs Manager is a strategic and programmatic leader with a dedicated focus on service excellence in program delivery.

The Manager is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective promotion and delivery of programs and services for children, youth, adults and seniors to meet the growing needs and strategic initiatives within the City and the community. Through creative problem solving, decision making, and community development, the Manager will ensure existing resources and partnerships are utilised to achieve the goals and expectations of the ED and JPRA Board. 

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for developing and managing all aspects of JPRA Programming, in consultation with the ED, to ensure the successful development and delivery of recreation and leisure programs.
  • Provides oversight and leadership to part-time employees, and volunteers, including recruitment, onboarding, training, development, and performance management.
  • Oversees day to day JPRA operations including but not limited to supervision of staff, engagement with clients and staff issues, and problem resolution.
  • Collaborates effectively with the City on community program matters related to the Jack Purcell Community Centre (JPCC).
  • Actively demonstrates and promotes exceptional customer service ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction; leverages technology to enhance the customer experience.
  • Works collaboratively with the ED to ensure the seamless delivery and promotion of programming.
  • Establishes successful and achievable work plans to meet program goals and objectives.
  • Identifies, assesses, and manages risk with regards to program development, new initiatives and partnerships in collaboration with the ED.
  • Develops and maintains internal and external partnerships to leverage resources and to achieve maximum benefit for the community and the City.
  • Remains current with best practices and provides expertise on services that directly affects JPRA’s programming complement.
  • May assist in the identification and preparation of applications related to grants and funding sources to aid in program development and/or enhancement.
  • Promotes a supportive, inclusive and safe environment for customers, staff and City partners.
  • Ensures community programs operate in full compliance with health and safety, accessibility, employment standards, and other relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation/Leisure or Business. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of education.
  • Five (5) years experience in the field of community services developing and delivering programs for children, youth, adults, and seniors.
  • Two (2) years leadership experience supervising and developing staff and delivering high quality outcomes in dynamic environments.
  • Experience in marketing and social media promotion
  • Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR-C or willingness to obtain.
  • A satisfactory police criminal and judicial matters check is required as a condition of hire.
  • Required to be on site for a full working day*
*Hours of work: 
  • 8 hour work day, up to a maximum of 42 hours per week
  • Any work outside of a normal work day or week must be approved in advance by the ED

Volunteer opportunities

Inclusive Recreation Programs
Inclusive recreation programs offered at the Jack Purcell Community Centre rely heavily upon dedicated volunteers.  Opportunities are available in the following programs:  Total Body Workout for persons with visual impairments, Special Needs weight room assistants, Rehab walking assistants, The Art Thing for persons with special needs and the MS exercise program.

Swim for Persons with Disabilities
Volunteer to assist person with disabilities in the pool and change room during the swims for persons with disabilities. These swims are offered Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10:30 AM to Noon and Thursdays from 7 – 8 PM. Responsibilities include: 
  • To assist patrons in the change room by helping them transfer from their wheelchair to bench, toilet, shower bench or shower chair as well as to assisting with showering and changing.
  • To assist patrons from the change room to the graduated stairs or over hang lift into the pool. To provide assistance with exercises, gentle massage upon patrons request and socialization with patrons.
  • Above all to assist in providing a safe and comfortable environment during their time at the centre.

We are looking for reliable, responsible, mature, punctual, patient and positive attitude. Must be willing to take a hand on approach with the persons with disabilities. Must have good communication skills with patrons, lifeguard, and full-time staff. Experience with persons with disabilities considered an asset but not required. Volunteers are expected to be punctual for every shift, to remain for the entire shift, and to notify a staff person as soon as possible if they are unable to attend. Time commitment is flexible based on what the volunteer can provide. One swim a week is the minimum requirement. Please contact the pool at 613-564-1028 if you have any additional questions.
